Ensure Your Pet's Health With These Kennel Cough Home Remedy Tips

Kennel cough in dogs is bronchitis with symptoms of dry cough, sneezing, choking or snorting. It can be caused by a bacterial or viral infection that produces inflammation of the upper respiratory system. Similar to the common cold in humans, it is usually not serious and often will run its course in ten days if the dog is generally healthy. A kennel cough home remedy may be used to soothe symptoms and strengthen the dog's immune system.

Tracheobronchitis (kennel cough) is spread when dogs are kept in crowded places where other infected dogs may be present. Boarding kennels, vaccination clinics or hospital waiting rooms may have poor ventilation and lots of warm air. If your dog will be spending time in a boarding kennel, herbs and/or homeopathic remedies can be used to prepare for the boarding time as a boost to your dogs immune system.

Depending on the age and health of your dog, you can always visit the vet if you suspect your dog is developing kennel cough. To ensure prevention of secondary infections, antibiotics will probably be used. This usually will not be a problem, but it's not recommended to use antibiotics as a "quick fix". In many cases, a kennel cough home remedy will be adequate to address the condition.

If your pet is coughing up mucous, this is not uncommon. Clear or cream colored phlegm will confirm that the infection is mild. Darker colored phlegm may mean that there is a secondary infection, which is more serious. If this is the case, a trip to the vet may be a good idea.

Rarely, there are instances of kennel cough that involve the distemper virus. This carries a higher risk and is considered to be serious. These cases need immediate attention to stop the progression of the disease.

For a simple infection, you can help your pet be more comfortable and recover more quickly. Provide a warm, draft-free space for your pet and make sure it has easy access to clean drinking water. Also, provide nutritious soft food that will be easier on a sore throat.

Some other kennel cough home remedy ideas include vitamin C supplements and herbal remedies like Echinacea and Golden seal which can help strengthen the immune system. Homeopathic remedies are particularly easy to administer and provide the multiple benefits of treating the immediate issue as well as increasing the body's ability to self heal and re-balance naturally.
