How to Blog in a Noisy Environment

Some people thrive in a noisy environment. They may write better when there is a lot of noise and activity around them.

Unfortunately, I'm not one of those people. I like absolute silence when I write or do anything that requires concentration.

However, sometimes a quiet environment is not an option. In fact, the thing that inspired me to write this post is that right now, there is noise humming all around me, and there is nothing I can do to stop it, and yet I have some writing I need to get done.

So here are a few ways that you, as a blogger who prefers to write in silence, can still get some writing done in times when silence is nowhere to be found.

1. Put on headphones.

Headphones may not completely block out noise, but they can at least muffle the sound, and help to block some of it out, while still allowing you to hear things you absolutely need to hear, such as the sound of the phone ringing.

2. Play a game of "beat the clock."

I find that my concentration increases when I set a time limit for getting a task done. For example, if I set a timer for 30 minutes, and say that I have to get my blog post written within a maximum of 30 minutes, I find that I am able to force myself to focus better, in spite of the noise.

3. Put on some white noise.

In a noisy environment, it may seem that the last thing you need is more noise, but white noise, such as the sound of a fan, or of a fountain with running water can help to mask other sounds that make it hard to concentrate.

4. Practice writing blog posts in noisy environments.

Even if your optimal writing environment is one of complete silence, as it is for me, the more you practice writing in a noisy environment, the easier it will get. While I doubt I will ever get to the place where I prefer noise over silence when it comes to my blogging atmosphere, the more I do it, the easier it becomes.

If you're like me, since you may find it harder to concentrate on your writing in a noisy environment, you'll be more likely to make mistakes when writing in less than optimal circumstances. Because of that, it's a good idea to only write rough drafts when the environment you're blogging in is a noisy one, and then proofread your blog posts when things quiet down a bit.
